I have to find a good devotional book ... Anyone have any suggestions? Hmmm ... yeah, I mean, my devotional time is good, but sometimes I just don't know what I'm reading ... I guess it's hard when I just randomly choose a passage to start reading. Lately I've been doing book studies ... hmmm ... I really should find some devotional, though. Haven't had time to go to the Christian Book Store.

Sidenote - can someone tell me why belly-buttons smelly like the stuff that floats (or sinks) in toilets?

Ewwwww ...

Absent-mindedly Christian

I was reading an article that I found very interesting. The title was "Absent-mindedly Christian." Mind you, there's a big difference between being absent-mindedly Christian and an absent minded Christian. In the article, the columnist, John Fischer, claims that too often Christianity is too self-conscious and too aware of itself. Because of this, Christianity "turned into something acted out when the situation called for it, but not at other times when being a Christian wasn't an issue."

According to Mr. Fischer, the better type of Christianity is "a faith that goes along with a person because it is an integral part of who they are, a part of the insides of that person, their heart and mind, their will and emotions. This is a faith that can come out anywhere, any time, and the owner of this faith is quite absent-minded about it. Not that they are forgetful about their faith as much as they forget to try. They don't have to try because their faith is self-evident in their heart."

I could not agree more with Mr. Fischer. Too often I'm at Berkeley and I have to purposely tell myself, "Okay, I gotta act Christian in front of these people. I have to remember to pray before my meals so people will know that I'm a Christian." It shouldn't be like this. Christianity shouldn't be like a coat that we have to remember to put on when it's cold and take off when we don't need it. Christianity should be like the skin we're in ... it's a part of who we are.

John Fischer goes on to sum up the difference between a self-conscious faith and an absent-minded faith.

"A self-conscious faith is a faith that is aware of itself - aware of defending itself, aware of being recognized as a faith and aware of the label. An absent-minded faith is self-evident, and it does not have to be called up. Those who are absent-mindedly Christian forget what they are supposed to be because they are too busy being who they are."

"Our witness is most effective when it isn't conscious of itself, and our faith is most effective when it is so much a part of us and everything we do that we don't have to remind ourselves to have it."

Something for me to work on ... being absent-mindedly Christian. Good stuff, eh?

A day with my family ...

Mom: (while watching the Angels game) "Spiezio ... That'd be a cool name for a car.
'What kind of car do you have?'
'A SPIEZIO.'
Don't you think that's a cool name for a car?"
Dad: (long pause) "Sure."

Po-po: "I don't like the yellow m&m's. They taste funny."

Auntie Jeannette: "Did you hear about the guy who got caught after a 17-hour flight
because he had a pair of pygmy monkeys in his underwear? That
must have been UNCOMFORTABLE!"

Mom: "Hey Nikki, if we gave you two last names, like Nicole Allison Ina Lee,
your initials would spell 'N.A.I.L.' "
Jenna: "I'd be J.A.I.L."

hmmm ... and people think that i'm weird ... BAH ... they haven't met my family! :-)

Brothers and Sisters in Christ

Living on campus here at Berkeley has taught me to really appreciate the bond I have with Christians that I have never even met before. It's awesome to walk around campus and see Christians praying together or reading their Bibles ... even though we come from different backgrounds and attend different churches, I still have this amazing bond with them because we are brothers and sisters in Christ. That's what I enjoy about the informal Bible studies that I have with some of my friends ... we all attend different churches and have different religious backgrounds, yet we have this connection, this bond in Christ. Wow. It's just awesome to think that I have brothers and sisters all around the world, and one day I will meet each and everyone of them as all worship the same, one true God. I can't wait.
